Long Lake

Situated at the choppy headwaters of Long Lake, Long Lake First Nation is just across the bridge from Longlac.

The first thing you notice is the old church.  Sitting majestically on a peninsula that juts into the water, the church looks like the subject of horror movies and scary stories.  You can see that the roof is falling in.  Some windows are missing and the church needs repair.  It’s old but has lots of character, and looks great sitting against the water.  It looks perfect for movies or random exploring, however access from Highway 11 is blocked by a large no trespassing sign.

The old church at the tip of Long Lake

The town is surrounded by some marsh land to the east.  The Long Lake First Nation General Store offered gas and snacks.  I didn’t go into town, however it seemed that there were about 50 homes and other buildings.

  1. I want to know how old the church is .Who built it and when was it last used as a church. Historical society should have answers to these questions. Also if they save it why are they not restoring it ?

  2. I’ve been living on reserve for the past 16 years…..and the church is not a site to see, they say churches are supposed to have a nice look. Well both inside and out are all destroyed. People have said that there is a tomb, where the old preist lays…..If there really was a body thier, Dont you think they should have it removed before the church clashes at its own….i myself know what it looks like inside…i jus want to know if there really is a body in there?

    I hate long lac.

  6. The church on the point was saved! It was scheduled for demolition the summer of 2008…but the historical society rescued it. There is a priest intombed in the basement of the church, they say he’s a Saint!
The church is in really rough shape, people have been in there to distroy things. The hard wood floor was even cut out with a chain saw…I hope they meet there makers when they leave this earth….Anyway hope you get to visit the town of Longlac there are some nice people there!

    • Sara,I have question. My hair color is dark brown/black. I want to dye my hair into dark red / bunugrdy. I don’t want to bleaching my hair.I want to use permanent dye. I live in Indonesia. Commonly available brands are L’oreal and Garnier. Do you have any suggestions, what color suit me? And which products are right for me and should I use?I also want to have a few streaks/highlights in my hair with bright colors. Such as blonde, or whatever fits.I don’t know if it matters, but my skin is yellow Asia. So it might be to adjust the color of my hair.Thank you so much

    • Been in the church, his grave is there. His bedroom is in there and if your brave enough you can climb an old ladder to the bell tower. A friend and I went in late and night to see what it would be like and look around. If your passing threw I’d check it out.
